Malatya Turgut Özal University was established on May 18, 2018, in accordance with the law published in the Official News.

The Department of Fisheries and aquaculture, within the Faculty of Agriculture, was founded in 2023 and began admitting undergraduate students in the same year.

As of 2025, the department consists of two professors, two associate professors, one assistant professor, and one research assistant as academic staff, along with one departmental secretary serving in the administrative unit.
